VIOLENT FIGHTING BETWEEN ARRAS AND THE SEA.

FORTUNES VARY ALONG THE BATTLEFRONT. GERMANS BRING RAW TROOPS INTO THE FIELD. (Received October 25, 7.30 p.m.) Paris, October 23. An official communique states: On our left very strong German forces continued to deliver violent attacks between the sea and Arras, particularly at Arras, La Bassee, and Armentieres. The allies lost ground at some points at La Basiee, but gained ground to the east of Armentieres. Three German batteries have been destroyed on the north of the Aisne. We have progressed north and south of the Somme, particularly Rosieres-en-Sentcrre, 20 miles east of Amiens. We have bad some partial successes at Verdun and Pont-a-Mousson, near the German frontier. There is nothing to report on the remainder of the front. The enemy are making fresh efforts, particularly between the sea and the Oise by employing new corps of raw troops, chiefly youths and old men, with officers gathered from different sources.
