OPERATIONS AT THAMES.

STOPPAGE OF PUMPING.

FLOODING OF THE MINES.

[dt telegraph.—own correspondent.]

Thames, Sunday. Following on the decision of the Thames Drainage Board to cease pumping operations, at tho Thamee-Hauraki shaft, ail v.ork at the northern end of the IOOOtt level nas been stopped, and the tools and appliances are being removed and sent to the surface. It is expected that tho pump will be stopped on Thursday, which, will prevent any further operations at the 1000 ft level from that date, either by the Deep Levels Mining Board or the May Queen Company, as the water will rise at once and flood the level, and will afterwards gradually flood all the other levels above in the mince within the drainage area.

The May Queen Company has continued tho extension of the underhand slope eastward mi the Exchange lode during the week with much the same result as pretiotisly, and the ore broken still shows good dabs of free gold. However, if the pumps stop work -on Thursday, these workings will have to be discontinued at once, as that portion of the level wouid be flooded in a few hours.

The operations of Vv'aiotahi Gold Mining Company at the No. 7 level 111 tins mine are still in progress, and the main reel is being driven both oast and west from the crosscut. No improvement has yet beer, found in the reef, which is of low grade. This company will be able to continue its operations at this level for a few weeks, in spit> of the stoppage ot tile pumps. a.-> it will take probably about I two months for the water to use. to the height of the Waiotahi No. 7 level After that the stoppage of the pump will mean the closing down of this and all other mines within the drainage area.
