TRAFALGAR DAY FERVOUR.
ALLIES' FLAGS HOISTED. TRIBUTES TO BELGIUM. FAITH IN ALLIED FLEETS. London, October 22. Thousands of people filed past the Nelson column in Trafalgar Square yesterday. Admiral Jellicoe's wreath was prominent. The celebrations connected with the day were of unparalleled fervour. In no less than 261 cities and towns the allies' flags were formally hoisted. At a crowded meeting of the Navy League in the London Opera House the allies were represented. Lord Charles Beresford, the principal speaker, said: "Belgium's fame, despite her ruined shrines and defiled homes, stands in the world's regard upon the highest pinnacle of all." Mr. T. Mackenzie, High Commissioner for New Zealand, moved a resolution covering a message to the Commander-in-Chief, officers, and men of the grand fleet, expressing confidence in the British and allies' fleets, and earnest wishes for a very early triumph over the enemy. NAVY LEAGUE MANIFESTO. EFFICIENCY OF THE FLEET. " NOTHING TO BE DESIRED." London, October 22. The Navy League's Trafalgar manifesto declares that the strength, fighting capacity and general efficiency of the British fleet stand on a higher level than has ever previously been achieved in British naval administration.
" In all its complex and elaborate detail," says the manifesto, "it is being conducted with vigour, skill and foresight, leaving nothing to be desired. The league congratulates the. Government on the appointment to the supreme command of Admiral Jcllicoe, whose name is an inspiration of hope and confidence to the officers and men.
The league is determined to oppose premature and ill-advised peace. Nothing less than the destruction of the menace of German sea power can secure the future peace of the world."
