COUNTY COUNCIL.

HOBSON. Tin: final ordinary meeting of the Hobeon County Council as at present constituted was held at Dargaville on October 16. -Mr. V. Trounson presided, and there wore also present : Messrs. F. J. Dargaville, I. C. Hawkins, J. A. Hemphill, 11. C Xew, S. (i. Barker, W. Montgomery, and J. J. Powell The chairman was eniKiivered to arrange an overdraft of £7933. The tender of A. Kerr, £211, for formation of Awakino Valley Road was accepted, as was also the tender of T. Median, 5s 6d per yard, for quarrying mid breaking metal at Avoca, A petition from Hoanga settlors, asking for the rescinding of all motions dealing with the metalling of their loads, was considered, and it was decided to apply for a State loan of £3000 for the purpose indicated, In regard to tho Aratapu Swamp drainage area, it was resolved to notify owners of adjoining properties that on completion oi their fencing a, sum of £100 would be available for drainage, betterment. The question of the shipment of cattle at Omti was considered. It was decided to erect a wharf at the stock clips at a cost of £100, provided the settlers interested contributed two-thirds of the amount. WAITOMO. After the meeting of the Waitomo County Council on Mor day evening the staff and solicitors ontertainerl the retiring numbers of the council at a dinner at tho Grand Hotel. Mr. G. P. Finlay presided, and made eulogistic reference to tho work ■ of tho council during its existence. Replying to the toast of the council, Mr. A. Scholes, chairman, said the council hud done its best, to further the progress of the district. It had been liberally assisted by the, Government in the shape of subsidies for metalling loans, with the result that a mini aggregating approximately £55,000 had been borrowed within the past three years, or rather more, for permanent work. In view of the Government subsidy, this meant that about £110.000 had been spent. Only £1300 a year had to bo found by way ol special rates to moot interest on the amount mentioned. During the evening Mr. P. Mora., county clerk, and Mr. E. 1!. Gould, engineer, were the recipients of handsome silver inkstands from the retir- . ing members of the count il.
