QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL.

FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. The annual sale of work in aid of the funds of the Queen Victoria School for Maori Girls, was held at the school yesterday. Dr. A. W. Averill, Anglican; Bishop of Auckland, and Mrs. Averill, were present. The bishop addressed thosepresent, pointing out that, contrary to the general opinion, the endowments attached to the school were very small. The school was doing a most useful work, and was deserving of every public support. He explained that the goods to be sold that afternoon had all been made by the girls, and really formed a most instructive exhibition of the capabilities of the scholars. < Mrs. Averill then declared the sale of work ! open. * • The foundation stone of the school was laid by King George on the occasion of his. visit to New Zealand as Duke of York, in 1901, and frequent inquiries received from the Ki.ig as to the 'chart's progress, hare testified to his interest in its welfare. The school is largely dene ident for its upkeep uoon the subscriptions of those who recognise the claims of Maori girls to a proper education. There are at present 50 girls 'rem all parts of the Auckland Province in the school. The main object of the annual sale of work is to assist in the I raising of funds for two scholarships.
