ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. Breeder, Clevedon-— trotting records published do not give the information in Question. ' Spobt, Papakura—So far as the records published in the Turf Register show, Baku has no: won a hurdle race Isqcif.eb, Wanganui.— l. The placed horses in she New Zealand Cup of 1905 were: — Koctuiform, 7st "lb; Parirata, 7st 12lb; and Qaarryman, Sst 7!b. 2. The publication of dividends is an oStJce against the law. It may, however, be stated that the dividend paid on the race in question was a record one for New Zealand.

NOTES BY PHAETON. THE A.J.O. DERBY. Ire Australian Jockey Club inaugurates it* spring meeting at Randwick to-day, when the 50th Derby will be brought up for decision. There will not be anything like the amount of New Zealand interest, centred in this year's Randwick blue riband as obtained in 1905, when Noctuiform and Sungod were produced on the New South Wales racecourse to carry the yellow jacket of the late Mr. Geo. G. Stead, with the result that the firstnamed succeeded in registering a world's time record in a Derby contest. Mr. E. J. Watt is the only New Zealander claiming a representative in to-day's Derby; and the disappointing little fact to be admitted in connection therewith is that it is a colt bred outside the shores of Maoriland that he has to call upon for his Derby effort. Mountain Knight is a son of the dual Derby winner Mountain King, who through his sire Wallace traces to the phenomenal Carbine. Mountain Knight is estimated to be a promising colt; and he is popularly accepted as a colt fitted to strive for Derby honours. Woorak, who was clearly the two-year-old crack of last season, signalised his reappearance en the scene at three-years-old a fortnight back by recording a meritorious victory in the Chelmsford Stakes, run over nine furlongs. Some double have been expressed as to Woorak proving a stayer; but that opinion is chiefly based on the fact that descendants of Traqnair are more noted ! for speed than endurance. Woorak accom- 1 plished his winning feat over nine -furlongs in a fashion tending to confound those expounding the view that he would j not be more than a sprinter, and his connections are apparently quite convinced that he will be equal to the mile i and a half which the Derby calls for. There are some who harbour the view that a filly will lead the field home in to-day's Derby, and the chief one of the weaker sex singled oat for special reference is Cariita (by Charlemagne —Coaronne). New Zealanders can take something more than a passing interest in Carlita, for it was in this Dominion that she first saw the light. In the decision of the Champagne Stakes run at Randwick last April Carlita fairly stretched Woorak, and with a win down to her credit in the Rosehtll Guineas her three-year-old prospects have been nicely brightened. It may be remarked that only on three occasions since 1870 has a filly led the field home in the A.J.C. Derby. Florence (by Boiardo) scored in 1870, then at an "interval of nine years Nellie (by Tim Whifßer) led the field home; and 18 years further on Picture (by Russley) beat all the colts.

A TROTTING EMBROGLIO. In regard to the agitation which is going on for an alteration of the system of handicapping in trotting the following is the data which the Northern Trotting Breeders, Owners, and Trainers' Association this week submitted to the Auckland Trotting Club, and which, was ruled out by the latter body: (1) All unplaced maiden horses to be placed on the same mark. !2) No horse shall be handicapped slower than its best winning performance. (3D No fraction of a second shall count against a horse's record. 141 Horses running second and third, and improving on their best performance shall receive an allowance of one second in. one mile and one mile and a-qaarter, and two seconds in a mile and a-half and two miles. 15) Horses with winning records slower than 2m 26s to the mile may be penalised no; more than two seconds per mile, three seconds in a mile and a-half, and five seconds in vwo miles ; this not to include penalties lor distance. 'That is, a horse with a two-mile record may be penalised four seconds in a mile race.) (6) Horses with a two-mile record better than 4.56, shall, if entered fof a shorter race, be penalised one second in the mile and a-hali and mile and a-quarter, and two I seconds in one mile. Horses with a mile ! and a-half record better than 3m 413 shall be penalised one second in a mile and a-quar-j ter and one mile. I ■7) Horses with race records of 2m 26s and | better to the mile shall be handicapped on i attual time, with allowances for second and | third performances, and subject to the following distance allowance table.

LEAVES FROM MY NOTEBOOB. Sir Solo having been shipped to Australia with a view to contesting the Melbourne Cup. New Zealand is pretty sure of having a representative in the field when the great Flemington handicap comes up for decision on the first Tuesday in November. While it undoubtedly savours of flying at high game to attack a Melbourne Cup with Sir Solo, it can be said for the Sir Laddo gelding that he has a credential that the great majority of his opponents are without. Sir Solo has won over two miles in decent tame, and, though no one could contend that the bay gelding met anything but a weak field when he scored his Auckland Cup victory at Ellerslie last Boxing Day, it can be validly argued that he acquitted himself creditably. Sir Solo had only 7st 111W in the saddle when he won the Auckland Cup, while in the Melbourne Cup Bst 61b is opposite his name. While there is probablv no great reason to proclaim Sir Solo's Melbourne Cup chance from the housetops, lip mar be found galloping when a lot of the field is stopping.

According to advice? to hand from Wellington. Reputation will not form one of the field for the Hawke's Bay Guineas. r. W. E. Bid will views with disfavour the procedure adopted by the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club in retaining the penalty clause to its classic event. In some cases, where suburban clubs are concerned, the penaltv system can be defended ; but this penalisation of winners for the Hawke's Bay Guineas invites a hostile attack. Mr. "Bidwill's action with Reputation should go some way with the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club to remove tie objectionable condition.

The faci of the Northern Trotting Horseowners, Breeders, and Trainers" Association having decided on standing out of the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting as a result of the committee of the latter body declining to entertain a request made for an alteration in the system of handicapping, naturally caused considerable interest to be centred in the posting of the entries received last night in connection with the approaching gathering at Alexandra Park. Despite the fact that the members of the association remained firm the entries received for the 16 events which form the programme total ISO, which is in excess of the number lodged for the corresponding meeting last year. The A-T.C. has therefore every reason to anticipate a successful gathering at Alexandra Park on October 14 and 17.

Though Campeador, the half-brother to the New Zealand Derby-winner Danube, has eo far nothing of a winning character to his credit, the bay colt is popularly ticked off to earn distinction before he is much older. Campeador was got by Charlemagne 11. from Neva, a daughter of Stepniak. As Charlemagne IL is a descendant of St. Simon, and Stepniak ranks as a grandson of Musket, there is some reason to regard Campeador's future with interest, for in most cases happv results attend the mating of the St. Simon and Musket families.

Gigandra (by —Miral. one of the most capable milers in Australia, made a satisfactory re-appearance this season by winning the Spring Stakes in fine stvle at Bosehill on tie 19th inst- Gigandra figures amongst the acceptances for the Epsom Handicap to be run at Randwick on Saturday next, in which he 13 weighted at 9st 101b. In the same race last spring, Gigandra (9st 51b) started favourite, and he beat all his opponents save Aleconner (7st 111b), who in a stirring finish beat the son of Ibex half a length.

When Cherubim was racing in New Zealand the popular opinion expounded in regard to the son of Martian was that staying would probably prove to be his forte. In summing matters up as between the Epsom Handicap (one mile), and the Metropolitan Handicap (one mile and a half;, the new owner of the New Zealand Derby winner selected the shorter distance race for his horse: Cherubini is weighted at Bst 71b in the Epsom Handicap, or 71b below weight-for-age.

Both Gold Sonit and Goldstream got on the winning list at Otaki, and should prove good advertisements for their sire, Gold Crest, for they both possess a lot of pace, and will certainly do even better with a bit more racing. " Gold Soult. whose dim is Consuela, ran a bit green, but came from a good way back when be won his five furlong event, while Goidstream ran past Tyson and Master Achilles like a racehorse later in the day. The latter races in the nomination of Mr. J. R. McDonald, and claims The Shannon as his dam- Gold Soult is owned by Mr. J. H. Prosser. Both are brown colts, and will be seen to advantage again.

Rather a peculiar and costly mistake betel Wild Lupin's party at Otaki on Tuesday. His horseman was weighed out by the clerk of the scales at Black Lupin's weight, and when Wild, Lupin was returned in third place his jockey failed to draw the right poundage. Thus was his owner relieved of third money.

The Napier Park Racing Club hold their spring meeting to-day, and the fact of a number of New Zealand Cup candidates being engaged will invest the racing with a good dash of interest.

The New Zealand-bred mare Anna Carlovna was sent out favourite for the Mentone Cup recently, but met with some interference and lost her rider. The mare was not injured, and she still holds her place as one of the popular fancies for the Caulfield Cup.

Amongst the promising two-year-olds down for an engagement in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes next month is March, a half-sister (by Marble Arch) to Salute, King Soult and Soldier. March is a really nice filly, and if she does not keep up the family record a good few keen judges will have to acknowledge themselves at fault.

MullingaT has progressed most eatisfac- : torily in his training since he ran at ; Avondale a fortnight back. The racing j which the Marble Arch colt went through , at the western suburb, there is every reason to believe, had a beneficial effect on the game little bay. The stable mates La Reina, Bleriot. and . Merry Roe, are all training on nicely at : Ellerslie, and Soult's three good-looking i daughters each carries a" bright appearat.ee. Monojack continues, to acquit himself nicely in his training work: and a good , race is to be expected from him when the | A.R.C. Spring Meeting rolls round next month- : Tragedy King is training on well at Ellerslie, and a strong opinion prevails that he win extend his winning record - before he is much older. Sutala is the name selected by Mr. G. D. Greenwood for the ElysianLady Hester colt, who claims close relationship to Master Soult. -According to a Sydney writer Mr. E. J. Watt has secured W. H. McLachlan to steer his colt Mountain Knight in the I A.J.C. Derby. j

STUD NOTES. HT PHAETOX. Quin Abbey, the horse imported from England last year by Messrs. Potts Brothers, of Te Awamutu, was most favourably viewed on being installed at nis new home in the Waikato; and amongst the mares entered on his first season's list were:—Bonny Doon (dam of Goidfire), Decoration (dam of Watchchain), Dalmatea (dam of Linnacost), Lady Godiva (dam of Dandy Breeze), and several other well-bred ones, such as Pitch and Toss, Mavourneen, Silver Star, Helen Soult, Larn, and unnamed relatives to Kiatere, Prince Merriwee, and Avalanche. Writing me from Ngaroti, Mr. Ernest Potts states that Quin Abbey has furnished into a very fine specimen of the thoroughbred horse. Got by Morganatic (a son of the celebrated St. Simon) from Honeypound, By Somerford (son of Galopin). it will be passing strange should Quin Abbey not prove a stud success. Mignon, Waimangu, Wenonah, and several other noteworthy mares are to be mated this season with Quin Abbey. The followings foalings were announced from Glenora Park during the week Mr. E. P. Tapper's Warbler, by CyrenianSongstress, a colt to General Latour: Mr.' W. Walters' Lady Bobs, by Soult —First Love, a filly to Marble Arch-, Mr. W. alters' Merry Nif, by Mem Hampton— Aroma, a filly to Marble Arch. A foal claiming full relationship to the brilliant Bobrikoff was last week added to the list of young thoroughbreds at Mr. I T. H. Lowry stud, the Wallace—Caroline mare Gossip throwing a colt to Fin- | land. In colour, of the black shade, the interesting little stranger talfes after his illustrious full brother in that respect. : At the Arrowfield Stud (N.S.W.) the Auckland-bred Solution (by Soult—Problem) produced a colt to the imported horse Cardinal Beaufort, but the foal only survived a short time- Seeing that Solution's last foal sold. Don Solvo, made 800 sruineas. the death of her foal by Cardinal Beaufort is a serious loss to the owners of the mar;. The first of the progeny of the imported horse Demosthenes made its appearance at Hawke's Bay recentlv, when. All's Well (by Hotchkiss— Miss" Annie) produced a fine filly to the Desmond horse. Demosthenes is very favourably viewed as a horse likely to put up a good stud record. Mr. A. Webber's Maliinga (by Soult— Spitfire), who was relegated to the stud last year, has produced a filly to Robert the Brucej

Abour four acres of the club's Papaknra property had been sold to Mr. Walters for £120 an acre. This would in no way a Seat the course as far as racing purposes were concerned, and would give the club a direct road from Takanini station, and would reduce the club's interest to Mr. Walters by about £20 per annum. The balance in hand totalled £1383 2s 7d.
