WAR AND TRADE. BUSINESS QUITE NORMAL, MERCHANTS' VIEWS. fCY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COKRESPONDBNT. ] CHKisTcrrcncn, Friday. The war has had no bad effect on trade generally in Cliristchurch. It lias affected individuals, especially" those whoso business depended upon the sale of articles manufactured in European countries, but the bulk of trade in the city is going on its course as if no struggle was taking place. Inquiries show that financial engagements are being met without undue difficulty, and the policies of enterprise that were begun early in the year are being carried out without alteration. Those who are in close touch with the centre of the city's business consider that the soundness of the business basis has j not been endangered, and that, in the circumstances, the position is very satisfactory. This feeling is noticeable in nearly all branches of business. The head |of the Christchurch agency of a large insurance company states that accounts were being paid with the same promptness las marked their payment this time last year. Among the general dealers there are no complaints in regard to the meeting of debts, and in the hvrge drapery establishments the dressmakers are working hard making fashionahlo costumes (or the races. The manager of one firm stated that bis head dressmaker had not yet refused orders, but was taking them without giving promises that they would be fulfilled. Later on he expected orders would have to be absolutely declined. Other departments of his establishment were quite as busy now as they were in September and October last year, and bis firm was looking forward to a very busy time until the end of the year. No Gerj man goods, ho said, now entered the I doors of his shops.

I The band of the infantry battalion ! and that of the Auckland Mounted Rifles I have, with continued practice, become i very efficient. The former band accom i panied the troops yesterday morning, and ! gave some admirable selections on the i Kohimarama beach after the manoeuvres

were over. The Infantry Band will play, a programme of music at the Albert Park to-morrow afternoon, and a collection will be made towards the fund to pay for the instruments. Funds for the band of the Mounted Rifles are also required to pay for the instruments, and funds for this purpose will also be acceptable. When General Godley visited the Otahuhu camp yesterday this band played several excellent selections.
