LEAVING FOR SERVICE

GERMANS FORGED NORTH. RIGHT WING HARASSED. UNABLE TO RESIST PRESSURE. GERMAN DEFEAT IN RUSSIA. TWO DIVISIONS ANNIHILATED. British territorials about to leave England for service abroad hare been publicly addressed by Earl Kitchener. It is noteworthy that Earl Kitchener, who has throughout -prepared for a long war, stated on this occasion that he did not believe the war would last long. The same tone is evident in a communication from Paris,' which says the news from the front has caused great relief, and that French officials believe that the worst is over. * The position in France continues to improve. For a fort= night the allies' left wing has been harassing the Germans and pressed them northward. A constant struggle has been maintained by the Germans to prevent the allies from turning their right wing, but the *•■>**> »«- * hns been abandoned, and an attempt made to break the allied line. The Belgians garrisoning the fores south of Antwerp are more than holding their own against a strong force of Germans. Frequent sorties from the garrison succeeded in driving the enemy back and terrorising their outposts. Russia's northern and southern armies hare both placed successes to their credit. Two divisions'of Germans have been annihilated in Russian territory, near the East Prussian frontier. The Germans are retreating through a forest, which, in parts, has been turned into a quagmire by recent rains. In Galicia the Russians have completely surrounded the fort° ress of Przemysl. Sanok, to the south-west of Przemysl, has been occupied, and an assault is being made on Turnow, on the north-west. There are indications that the Russians propose to cross Galicia rapidly in order to junction with their central army for the invasion of Germany.
