VjIn reply, Mr. . Wilson, sent ' .' the following estimates ,of tho cost of construction, which ho obtained from tho Public Works . Department:—No. 1. Kawhia to Frankton, a distance of 35 . miles 30 . ; chains, estimated 'cost £469,040; No.. 2, Kawhia to Kawa,:.3o miles, £440,650 No. 3, ' Kawhia to Kioko, 30 miles 60 chains, £479,200; No. 4, Kawhia to Hangatiki, 36 miles 28 chains, £523,700. •~' ,S- UW^®*?^ '.The engineer prefers No. 2 route as being . the shortest - and : least . costly, though tho grades - are not particularly, good. ;In No. 1 there would be two tunnels and in No. 2 one tunnel, which would cost more than; the two in' No. 1.
