VISIT OF THE SECRETARY,

I The numerous activities • of the Royal Colonial Institute were described by tlig secretary, ill-. James R. Boose, in an address yesterday afternoon to a meeting convened by tho president of tho Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Bart. Kent.; As oriiv short notice had ' been possible the attendance was not largo, but a cordial welcome was accorded to Mr. Boose,= and the information ho gave was received with much interest. Mr. Boose 'explained.; that although the practical advantages' ot fellowship were particularly shared by. resident in, or visitor to, London, tho institute matlo' a strong appeal to residents initio Overseas Dominions for their co-operation in its efforts towards the. closer and permanent unity of the Empire. During the 41 yews in which ho had been associated with the' institute its V membership had increased from 279 -to 10,500, and the increase in the past four; years had been greater than in the whole of the previous 7 portion of that period, Now the great majority , of the fellows were residents in tho Overseas Dominions. Mr. Boose explained that the institute' was acting in concert with the Overseas Club and the Victoria League, both o! which have similar aims. Ho suggested that a local committee should bo formed tc enlarge the interest in the work of thq institute. In moving a vote of thanks to Mr. Boose, the Hon. G. Fowlds said ha had personal experience of the assistance! which visitors' to London could obtain, from the institute. He remarked that in th& past the institute had done splendid work, and now that, it was becoming really strong it could be expected to perform better and more in\port?iit work in the. interests of the Empire. Appreciation of tho society's worK was also expressed by Mr. Kent, who remarked thai every business man in the Dominion' should be included in its fellowship. At the request of Mr. Boose, Mr. Kent undertook to receive nominations of any persons desirous of election as fellows of the institute.
