J§} Petrograd, September 29. -V It is officially announced that the Russians are rapidly pushing " j!" the offensive in the Augustowo Forests, in Russian Poland, south of •' : M% Suwalki. * - • C' The Germans have been considerably reinforced on the Silesian J front, where they are displaying great activity. |f Bustian experts consider that the Germans changed their East " 4 Prussia plans deliberately, and are seeking a territory suitable for ■- wintering in. They are abandoning their lightning blows, which: — hitherto they have attempted against the Russian troops. Suwalki is 65 miles north-west of Grodno, in Poland, and about ten miles SSI from the frontier of East Prussia. The region of Suwalki is studded with la';es, Its northern slopes descend to the valley of the Niemen, while in the south it ifPlll falls away gently to the marshy tract of the Brebrz. The rivers flow there in deep-cut gorges and hollows, diversifying the surface. Forests cover about one.
