OPENING OF CAMPAIGN. PROVINCIAL CONTESTS. CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED. The decision of the Government that here shall not be any extension of the present Parliament has been followed bv preliminary preparations for the general elections. Supporters of candidates have already met in several of the constituencies in the Auckland district to form committees, and a few candidates have opened their campaigns with public ad drosses.

A day in the first week of December is usually fixed for the polk, so that only about nine weeks remain for the campaign by candidates. Those who are not at present members of Parliament are takin<* advantage of the continuation of ih?session, a.nd canvassing is actively proceeding. Several candidates are preparing for their platform activities and within a couple of weeks, the campaign will be in full progress. There are 21 electoral districts, including two M;x>n districts, in the Auckland province The present representatives of the European constituencies with one exception, are all candidates for re-election. .Mr. John Bollard has decided to retire after representing Eden for 18 years, and in his place, -1 r.
