NEWMARKET COUNCIL.
The Newmarket Borough C. utcil met last t night, when there were present: The j Mayor, Mr. D. Teed, and Messrs. W. J. .laffrey, S. Donaldson, W. Fookes, A. heccombe, J. McColl, and J. H. Fish. It was decided, in consequcnce of a letter from Mr. Robert Burns, ActingConsul for Belgium, to open a subscription list at the Town Hall, in aid of the Belgian relief fund. A similar application was received from the secretaries of the Huntly relief fund, and a similar course was adopted with regard to it. A letter was received from the Railway Department giving the council permission to take over 32 perches of the Newmarket railway reserve for use as a public road. The same Department stated that it had no objection to allowing the Telephone Department to erect a telephone at the entrance to the Newmarket railway station. A peppercorn rental only would be charged. The matter of late garbage remoavl in the main street was referred to by several councillors, and the Mayor promised to have this work done earlier in future. After a short discussion, in which dissatisfaction with the present tramway service was expressed, it was resolved' that the Tramway Company be written to and asked when its new time-table would be available. A further three months' leave of absence was granted to Mr. A. E. Whittome.
