CONTROL OF THE BEACHES.
CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE. The Auckland Harbour Board Vesting "Ul was again discussed by the City Council at its meeting last evening, when a report from the Finance Committee was brought forward recommending that the council approve of the general principle embodied in the Bill, but supporting the Tamaki Road Board in its endeavour to obtain the addition of a clause preserving the Kohimarama and St. Heliers beaches for recreative purposes. Mr. R. Tudehope moved as an amendment that the Tamaki Road Board should approach the Harbour Board with the object of obtaining an undertaking that that body would not interfere with the beaches. He felt sure that such an undertaking would be forthcoming. He pointed out that the council approved the general principle of the Bill. Mr. T. L. Thompson seconded the motion. After considerable discussion the amendment was lost and the committee's recommendation was adopted by eleven votes to nine.
