NEW CREWS AND NEW NAMES.

ANSWER TO THE POWERS.

London, August 15.
A message from Constantinople states that Turkey has paid Germany about £4,000,000 for the cruisers Goeben and Breslnu. The ships have been renamed Sultan of Ynwuzseriim and Midellu respectively.
The Porte lias assured Russia that the German officers and men will im-| mediately disembark, and be replaced by Turkish crews under Admiral Limpns. There is no intention of employing the cruisers against Russia. Turkey believes that the purchase will calm popular indignation due to the seizure of the Osman and the Reshadieh, the two Dreadnoughts which were being built in England and taken over at the outbreak of war.
Greece is said to be much concerned at the sale of the warships to Turkey. It is also expected that Italy will demand an explanation as to the further use of the ships.
Franco considers that the sudden conversion of the cruisers into Turkish ships, after they had bombarded two French ports, constitutes a breach of Turkey's neutrality.
Renter's Agency points out that I though the Goebcn'fi speed and also ! her guns are so superior to those, of [ any ship in the Russian Black Sea I Squadron that she could destroy any | vessel almost without danger, it is i doubtful if Turkish officers and gunners are sufficiently experienced to ! bring about such a result. Prince Eddin, nephew of the Sultan, has telegraphed to the French Ministry stating that Turkey appeals for support to the Triple Entente in order to guarantee her existence, which would be threatened by Pan-Germanism.
j The Turkish Ambassador has I assured Sir Edward Grey that Turkey, despite the purchase of the warships, intends to remain neutral and not to embark on any policy of adventure.
According to a message from Malta, it is stated that British warships chased the Goeben and the Breslau until they entered the Dardanelles.
