ORCHARD WORK.
WINTER SPRAYING.
ITS IMPORTANCE.
It has come to be recognised by the most Up-to-date orchardists that spraying fruit trees in winter and early spring is a vital necessity, if the best returns are. to bo obtained. It is when the trees are in a dormant condition, and before the buds burst in spring that tho utmost efforts should bo devoted to destroying the insect pests and tho fungous growths which produce such heavy losses to the fruitgrower. Too much emphasis cannot be laid upon the importance of this winter spraying, and the best men advise not only spraying in tho winter itself, but also in the early spring, just before tho buds begin to burst, as it ensures a larger amount of spray on tho trees during tho early summer, and thus destroys any fungous growths or any young scales from adults which may have escaped destruction. This continued action of the spray is perhaps quite as important as its first effect. It lias been amply demonstrated not only on all the great experimental stations and fruit farms of the United States of America and Australasia, but throughout tho Dominion as well, that SHERWIN-WIL-HAMS' LDIE SULFUR SOLUTION is the most reliable and satisfactory spray for winter and early spring, because it POSSESSES THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF INSECTICIDAL AND FUNGICIDAL EFFECTIVENESS. _ Abundant experience has shown that Sherwin-Wil hams' Limo Sulfur Solution is a most effective remedy in the control of San Joso Bcale, Peach Scale, Oyster Shell Scale, Scurfy Scale, etc. It also i 3 effectivo in destroying the winter eggs of tho aphides, .which" affect the foliage of the apple. It also destroys tho eggs of the pear tree psylla, which are deposited on tho trees very early in the season by over-wintering adults. It also destroys the pear leaf blister mite, which passes the winter under bud scales of the pear and apple, and attacks the expanding foliage in the spring. Tho eggs of tho red spider %nd other mites are also destroyed. If applied before tho buds open it effectually controls, the leaf curi and die-back in tho peach and nectarine, as well as apple and pear icab. brown rot, and black spot. Tho iherwin-Willianis' Lima Sulfur Solution is •put up in reputed quart bottles, one-gallon and rive-gallon tins, and 50-gallon casks, end is sold by storekeepers and seedsmen everywhere.
