ORCHARD WORK.
WINTER SPRAYING.
ITS IMPORTANCE.
It has come to bo recognised by the mo?fl up-to-date orchardists that spraying fruit trees in winter and early spring' is a vital necessity, if the best returns are to ha obtained. It is when the trees arc in a dormant condition, and before the buds burst in spring that the utmost efforts should be devoted to destroying the insect pests and the fungous growths which produce such heavy losses to the fruitgrower. Too much emphasis cannot be laid upon the importance of this winter spraying, and the best men advise not wily spraying in the winter itself, but also in the early spring, just before the buds begin to burst, as it ensures a larger amount of spray on the trees during the early summer, and thus destroys any fungous growths or any young scales from adults which may have escaped destruction. This continued action of the spray is perhaps quite as important as its first effect. It has been amply demonstrated not only on all the great experimental stations and fruit farms of the United States of America and Australasia, but throughout the Dominion as well, that SHERWIN-WIL-LIAMS' LLME SULFUK SOLUTION is the most reliable and satisfactory spray for witter and early spring, because it POSSESSES THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF INSECTICIDAL AND FUMJI3IDAL EFFECTIVENESS. Abundant experience has shown that Sherwin-Wil-bains' Lime Sulfur Solution is a most effective remedy in the control of San Jose Scale, Peach Scale, Oyster Shell !>cale, Scurfy Scale, etc. It also is effective in destroying the winter eggs of the aphides, which affect the foliage of the apple. it also destroys the eggs of Iho pear tree psylia, which are deposited on the Uvea very early in the season by over-wintering adults, "it also destroys the pear leaf blister mite, which passes the winter under bud scales of the pear and apple, and [attacks the expanding foliage in the spring. The eggs of the red spider and other mites are also destroyed. If applied before the buds open it effectually controls, the leaf curl and die-back in the peach and nectarine, as well as apple and pear scab, brown rot, and black spot. The Suerwin-Williams' Lime Sultur Solution is put up in reputed quart bottles,*.one-gallon and five-gallon tins, and 60-jgallon casks, and is sold by storekeepers arid seedsmen everywhere.
