.'WINTER SPRAYING. i, ITS IMPORTANCE. It has come to be recognised by the most up-to-date orchardists that spraying fruit trees in winter and early spring is a vital necessity, if the best returns aro to be obtained. It is when the trees are in a dormant condition, and before the buds burst in spring that the utmost efforts should be devoted to destroying tho insect pests and tho fungous growths which produce such heavy losses to the fruitgrower, 100 much emphasis cannot bo laid upon tho importance of this winter spraying, and tho best men advise not only spraying in the winter itself, but also in the early spring, just before tho buds begin to burst, as it ensures a larger amount of spray on tho trees during the early summer, and thus destroys any fungous growths or any young scales from adults which may have escaped destruction. This continued action of the spray is perhaps quite as important as its first effect.
