LARGE GERMAN FORCE MARCHING UPON LIEGE.
CAVALRY REPULSED IN FREQUENT SKIRMISHES. ARMS FACTORY DEFENDED BY WOMEN AND OLD MEN. BOILING WATER USED TO BEAT OFF UHLAN PATROLS. ('Received August 12, 7.65 p.m.) Brussels, August 11. Ten thousand German cavalry, followed by a detachment of infantry, have commenced methodical reconnaissances. A strong force of German troops, advancing through tho Hesbayo district, has halted at Hannut, 20 miles west of Liege. Skirmishes arc constantly taking place in tho vicinity of Tirlemont. Everywhere the German cavalry has been repulsed with losses. After the departure of the conscripts from Borstal, the town five miles north of Liege, where a German concentration is in progress, only women and old men remained. In order to defend the national small arms factory they armed thomsclvcs with revolvers and other weapons, and repulsed'several Uhlan patrols. When their ammunition was exhausted, the Belgians barricaded their houses and poured boiling water upon tho attackers. . The factory has not been captured.
