LOSS OF THE AMPHION.

PREFACE TO DISASTER.

MINE-LAYER'S DEFIANCE.

WOULD NOT SURRENDER.

London, August 10.

Four British sailors from the Amphion, which was sunk by striking the cable connecting two mines, and four German sailors from the Koenigin Luise, the mine-layer, were buried to-day in a common grave at Shotley. One of the Amphion's survivors states that when the Koenigin Luise was sighted, a shot was fired across her bows. She refused to stop, and the chase was begun. The destroyers caught and surrounded her.

The captain refused to surrender, and the ship was then sunk. The disaster to the Amphion occurred when returning to port.
