NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND

Wellington, Tuesday. The membership and income of tho National Provident Fund increased considerably during 1913. There are now 0791 members, and the annual rate of contributions payable is £22,719. The total enrolments up to March 31, 1914, were 7538. PRISONS BOARD. Tho number of cases dealt with, by, the Prisons Board for the year were 560. The board recommended 35 -habitual criminals and offenders for release on probation, and 10, including five already on probation, for absolute discharge. Fiiteen of those released on probation broke tho conditions of their license, and 12 were returned to prison. The other three had" not reported themselves. .The number. ' of persons under reformative treatment recommended for release or discharge by the board was 99. In 26 cases the probationary license had been cancelled, fivo having been found guilty of a.specific offence, and 21 having committed breaches of the terms of their license. The saving habit is being encouraged. among . the , habitual criminals, and many have accumulated the whole or part of tho small sum granted them— a day for industry and good conduct.
