PROGRESS OF THE WORKS.

MECHANICS' BAY RECLAMATION;

The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday. Present: The chairman, Mr. J. H. Gunson, and Messrs. H. D. Heather, E. W. Alison, W. B. Leylaud, H, H. Adams, "VV. R. Mackenzie, W. E. Hutchison, G. It. Hutchinson, A. J. Entrican, and P. Virtue.

Tito report of the acting-engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, stated that the work on tho Quay Street extension was making rapid progress. The Work on the western breakwater was progressing well. Excellent progress was being made with the work on the Mechanics' Bay reclamation, over 30,000 yds of material having been deposited in a fortnight. The steps for the up-river launches would be completed next week. All coffer dam work on the slipway at Freeman's Bay was finished and dredging outsido the dam had been started.

The City Council intimated that it had granted the board's application for permission to lay down a tramway in Beaumont Street. The council's terms were accepted, but it was decided that the actual laying of tho lino bo deferred in the meantime.

The Napier Land Agency wrote, stating that it was arranging to send a steam trawler to Auckland, and it asked permission to sell fish on board the trawler alongside the wharf. Tho traffic manager advised, and it was decided, that permission be not granted. In regard to storage of goods, it was decided to inform the General Carriers' Union that the practice by which a ship is responsible for the sorting of cargo will be discontinued, and that the sorting of goods must be left in the hands of the stevedores.
