NECESSARIES FOR TROOPS.

CAMPAIGN ON THURSDAY.

T)ior wa/i a largo attendance of ladies at the meeting in the Town Hall convened by the Mayoress, Mrs. C. J. Parr, yesterday for the purpose of raising funds to provide necessaries for the troops that art leaving New Zealand. The proceedings were characterised by great enthusiasm.

Tho Mayor, who presided, explained thai the meeting was called at the request oi tho Countess of Liverpool, who bad inaugurated the movement to provide necessaries for the troops. Little was yet known as to what would be acceptable to tho Defence authorities and ho asked the. ladies not to do anything unless they got somo definite instructions as to what would bo required. Tho Mayoress had received a request for 2000 grey flann<u shirts and an order had bean given to have them mado up wholesale at onco b) a local firm. (Applause.)

Proceeding, the Mayor said that the greater part of tho ladies' efforts should be dovoted to obtaining money at the street collection which was fixed for Thursday. Mrs. W. Rattray and Mrs. C. M. Nelson, both of whom had considerable experience in street collecting, would be in charge of the arrangements. The hours of collection would be between 9 a.m. ana 6 p.m. Forty-five ladies would be in charge of the stations and they would neea a large number of assistants as it was not proposed that any lady should collect foi more than two hours at a time.

Many ladies offered their services as collectors, but Mrs. Rattray states that a few more volunteers axe required to collect between the hours of 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., especially in the Ponsonby district.

The Mayor announced that the factory girls of Messrs. Macky, Logan and Caldwell had offered to give up two evenings a week to make shirts for tho troops. Offers of help in any sewing required were received from the Civic League, Victoria League. Girls' Grammar School, Technical School, public schools, and from many other quarters.

A committee to organise the efforts of the ladies in regard to sewing and other work required was appointed.

Those willing to assist in the street collecting are to meet in tie Town Hall at 3 p.m. to-day. A collection amounting to £112 was taken up at the meeting. SUPPORT IN THE SUBURBS. NEWMARKET AND DEVONPORT. In response to the appeal made by Lady Liverpool for funds and clothing for the expeditionary force that is leaving New Zealand for Europe a large number of ladies met at the Newmarket Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon 1 decido in what direction they could best give their assistance.

The Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. D. Teed, presided, and after explaining the object for which. tho meeting was called, suggested that a street collection should be made on Thursday next. The headmastu 1 of the Newmarket school, he said, tad offered to allow a number of the senior pupils to canvass tho borough for dona-, tions, and arrangements had been made with the town clerk to act as treasurer for the fund.

The suggestion was agreed to, and from remarks made by some of the ladies present, a sewing beo will probably bo formed to make garments.

A large number of ladies assembled in the Devonport Council Chambers yesterday afternoon in lesponse to an appeal of the -Mayoress, Mi's. A. E. • Handley. The Mayor Mr. W. A good deal of anxiety is being expressed by friends and relatives of those who are joining the expeditionary force as to how they would fare financially in the event of misfortune or disaster. The Government has under consideration the question of providing insurance policies for all men who go to the front, and it, may be pointed out that the matter is dealt with to a considerable extent by the Defence Act, 1909, the schedule of which deals with the subject of pensions to officers and men who are wounded in action or injured in the actual performance I of their duties.

Pensions to officers range from £250 for lieutenant-colonel to £75 for secondlieutenant. Pensions to non-commissioned

officers and privates range as under:— Sorgeants of first degree from 2s 6d to 4s a day; second degree, 3s; third degree, 1b 3d to 2s 8d per day ; corporal, first degree from Is lOd to 3s 4d per day j second degree, 2s Gd; third degree, Is to 2s 3d; privates, first degree, Is 6d to 3s per day; second degree, 2s 2d; third degree, 8d to 2s. Allowances to widows and children of colonels from £150 and £16 per annum respectively; lieutenant-colonels from £120 and £14; majors, £120 and £14; captains, £80 and £10; surgeons, £80 and £10; lieutenants and assistant-surgeons, £60 and £6; second lieutenants, £46 and £6; non-commissioned officers and privates, £36 and £4 In each case the smaller figures are pensions provided for children.
