NATIONAL ARDOUR.
GENEROSITY IN BRITAIN.
RELIEF FOR THOSE IN NEED.
PRINCE OF WALES'S FUND.
London, August 9.
The first contribution to the relief fund, of which the Prince of Wales is president, came from the regiment of Grenadier Guards, who sent £18,000.
The King has given £5000, the Queen 1000 guineas, Queen Alexandra £500, and the Prince of Wales himself £3000. Mr. George Coats, an Ayrshire braid manufacturer, gave £50,000, Lord Ashton £25,000, while there have been a number of £10,000 donations.
The fund now totals £400,000, including donations from the Imperial Tobacco Company of £25,000, and the Duke of Devonshire of £15,000.
The Bishop of London, who is chaplain to the London Rifle Brigade, has offered to serve for six weeks with the brigade whenever he may be ordered to do so.
A great demonstration took place at Buckingham Palace to-day. The crowds cheered the King and Queen, and also the Grenadiers, who marched past.
A proposed big demonstration to the Belgian Legation was abandoned at the request of the Belgian Minister, who said he felt the time was not opportune for demonstrations. The Tyne employers and their workmen are warmly co-operating in order to expedite Admiralty contracts.
Great crowds nightly cheer the Italian Embassy.
