UNEMPLOYMENT QUESTION.

Wellington', Monday. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m.
Dr. A. K. , Newman (Wellington) said that many people outside the House were anxious to know if, in the event of serious unemployment, the Government would take any steps to relieve hardship.
In reply Mr. Massey said he was prepared to do all that ho could to relieve distress and public works would be carried on 4
A message was received from the Legislative Council to the effect that the Mortgages Extension and Regulation of Trad, and Commerce Bills had passed with amendments.
The Attorney-General, the Hon. A. L. Herdman, asked that 'the amendments made in the Mortgages Extension Bill be hold over for consideration and Mr. Massey agreed to the amendments made in the other Bill. •
The Prime Minister read the message received from Lord Kitchener in connection with New Zealand's offer.
Sir Joseph Ward said he felt Lord Kitchener's message would be read with keen satisfaction in all parts of New Zealand. He expressed great pleasure thaiLord' Kitchener should be: placed in supremo command of the Imperial Army. It was gratifying to hear the Primo Minister acknowledge so many generous offers. Mr. L. M. Isitt . (Christchurch North) introduced the Industrial Arbitration Act Amendment Bill and the first reading was agreed to. On the motion of the Prime Minister the House then adjourned until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday when two important financial Bills will be brought down.
