BLIND MAN CHARGED. THREE MONTHS FOR ASSAULT. ■i Charged in the Police Court yesterday, "before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., with having assaulted a constable and with having resisted arrest, John George McCarthy, a blind man, was sqntonced to threo months' hard labour. Frank Ernest Cowley, whilst under the influence of liquor, also assaulted a constable, doing damage estimated at 12s 6d, to his helmet. Cowley was fined £2, and was ordered to pay 18s 6d costs and damages.
Having broken two windows, valued at five guineas, William McNeil was ordered to make good the damago within 24 hours, or else to go to gaol for a fortnight. The breakage was the result of iMcNeil being ejected from the Oxford Hotel.
Convicted of insobriety, one first offender was discharged, two others wore fined 5s each, whilst a fourth was fined 10s, as he was in charge of a horse and cart at the time. Louis Eglien was fined 10s for his third offence, being also prohibited by consent. A fine of £3 was imposed upon Andrew Clive for the fourth breach of his prohibition order, the alternative being fixed at 14 days' hard labour. William Albert Maxwell and Joseph J. Salmon were fined k2 and £1 respectively for breaches of their orders.
" This man is continuously drunk in his own house. He was drunk about 12 times last week," said the sub-inspector in reference to Arthur Postlewaite, who was convicted of tho third Breach of his prohibition order. The accused was fined £5, with the alternative, of a month's imprisonment, no time being granted in which to pay the money.
