OBITUARY.

MR. W. C. G. SPEIGHT.

Tm death occurred at his residence, St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, yesterday morning, of Mr. William C. G. Speight, well-known in athletic and sporting circles. For some time past the deceased had suffered from an internal complaint, and his death was not altogether unexpected. Born in Auckland 47 years ago, Ml. Speight was the son of the late SergeantMajor William Isaac Speight, of the bßth Regiment. Until ill-health compelled his retirement, ho was a member of the commercial staff of the Auckland Star. _ For many years thq deceased was prominent in athletic, circles throughout the Dominion, and ho played for the old Grafton Football Club. When the district scheme was inaugurated, and the Grafton Club disbanded in e 1892, Mr. Speight represented the Parnoil District Club as one of its first delegates to.the Auckland Rugby Union, being elected a member of the Management Committee. Subsequently he acted as one of the selectors of the' Auckland representative teams. As a member of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club, the deceased for many years was well-known on the track, and later ho became secretary lo the club, Tie was a life member of the club, and acted as one of the judges at the carnivals. The deceased was also a cricket, and vacMing enthusiast. The late Air. Speight married a daughter of Mr. W. R. Ellison, and he is survived by a family of three-Mr. Harold Speight, "of the Bank of New Zealand, Raetihi ; Mrs. bcottSmitli, of Sydney; and Miss Speight, ahe interment will take place at Purewa Cemetery this afternoon.
