FLOOD PREVENTION.
SCHEME FOR GISBORNE. I
[bt telegraph.— correspondent.] Gisboene, Thursday. The poverty Bay' River Board received to-day a report prepared by Mr. Laing Meason on the subject of flood-prevention. Tho reporting engineer recommends works costing £45,000. He proposes that extensive embankment works on both sides of the.river, two cuts across narrow necks of land where the river has a circular course at Teitjen's Bend and Matawhero Bridge, and a series of channel improvements. He points oat that from" Kaitaratahi to the sea by a direct airline is 13 miles, whereas tho Waipaoa winds over a sinuous course 20g miles. The two most prominent bends aro at Teitjcns wh*ro the river traverses two miles to progress 25 chains and at tho Matawhero traffic bridge, where it detours 3 miles to accomplish the same distance. By making cuts to 6traighten the channel at theEO points, a much better flow will be obtained.
The ratable value of property in tho river district is £750,000 and the whole work can be completed and maintained with a rato barely exceeding Id in tho £.
