TIMBER-WORKERS' DEPUTATION.
Sir,—ln the Herald of the 13th inst. "Small Settler" writes stating that the timber-workers' have approached the Prime, Minister with a view to placing! an export duty on butter. As one of the deputation I would like to explain to " Small Settler" that such was not tho case. We did not ask that a duty be placed on butter, as suggested by him. We asked that a short Bill be introduced whereby the prices ruling in England should be the maximum charged in the Dominion. "Small Settler" also suggests that the country workers should combine and approach Mr. Massey. requesting that an export duty be placed on all timber. As for the prices ruling for timber a few years ago 1 have no remarks to make, but to that portion of his letter wherein ho states that at that time the wages of timber-workers were fair I must certainly take exception. Neither then nor now can it be said that the timber-workers are in receipt of a fair day's wage. Edw. Phelan.
