COUNCIL AND CLUB.
SWIMMING ON SUNDAY.
Proceedings have been in.Hitntod by tho Wellington City Council ags.inst tho cap tain of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club, upon a charge that ho obstructed the caretaker of the To Aro baths in the execution of his duty. The prosecution is a sequel to an advertisement announcing that the club would hold a "midwinter handicap " swimming race in the baths on ! Sunday, June 28, "hail, rain, or snow.' j A notice was posted on tho club's board! at tho baths inviting entries, but, in re- 1 sponso to protests against competitive! ewimming on a Sunday, the chairman of ] a City Committee, to which the matter was ! referred by tho Mayor, decided to pro-1 hibit the fixture. A notice that the race i had been postponed until further notice j "by order" was substituted by the caretaker for the club's original invitation to i competitors, and was in turn, it is alleged, j removed by tho captain of the club. ! Another notice " by order of the council " j was then placed on the board, but a race, j in which 14 swimmers competed, was held | on tho date originally fixed. The case j will bo heard in the Wellington Magis-1 trate's Court shortly. j
