ORANGE CELEBRATIONS.

AUCKLAND CHURCH PARADE

The Orangemen of Auckland held a church parade at St. Stephen's Church yesterday morning. The church was crowded, there being at least 250 Orangemen present. The Rev. I. Jolly was the preacher, and he took as his text the words of St. Paul, " The Holy Scriptures, which arc able to make thee wise unto salvation." In the course of his sermon the preacher specially referred to the famous protest given by the reformers at the Di«t of Speir in 1529, from which tbo name Protestant originated. He showed that it was not correct to represent the protest as being merely negative, but that the chief element in the protest was its positive declaration that Holy Scripture was tho Divine ari'i sufficient source of saving truth. He quoted the words of the famous protest: "This Word is the only truth; it is the sure rule of all doctrine and of all life, and can never fail or deceive us." The preacher also showed that the protest declared that Holy Scripture spoke bo that men could understand and believe in tho saving of their souls. The very words of the protest were: " This Holy Book is in all things necessary for the Christian, easy of understanding, and calculated to scatter darkness." "it was then shown that Protestantism taught that it was the duty of every man to hear and obey tho word of God from men. In closing, the preacher urged upon his hearers the duty of hearing and obeying the Word of God, and teaching it to their children, and j seeing that : t was read in the homes and the schools in New Zealand. The fact was emphasised that in every Protestant country in Europe the Bible was read in the schools, and that in excluding it from the schools in New Zealand the people were false to the principles of Protestantism. The service closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
