AMERICA CUP TRIALS.

* VANITIE BEATS RESOLUTE. •

The yacht Vanitie turned tho tables on the Resolute in tho fourth Long Island Sound race, sailed on Juno 6 under the auspices of the Laichmont Yacht Club over a triangular course, winning by 5 minutes 52 seconds in elapsed time. As the Vanitie gives the Resolute an estimated allowance over the 29J miles courso of 3m 12s, the margin was believed to have been 2m 40s.

Although sailed in light to moderate airs, which were somewhat uncertain at times, the race was a fairer test than the contest on June 2, which was regarded as more or less of a fluke, and which the Vanitie won by 16ra 48s. Except for the first two miles the fourth race was more of a procession than when the Resolute led the Vanitie on the second race on June 3, which the Bristol boat won by lis. : The yachts were to be overhauled in preparation for tho three open-sea contesta off Sandy Hook . Tho yachts started their fourth race shortly after one o'clock. The Resolute crossed the line at lb 17m 28s and the

Vanitio at lh 17m 41s. Both had balloon jibs Bet- as they got under way. ' Bounding the first mark, six miles from the start, Vanitie led Resolute by about three minutes.

The times at the third mark with the race half over were : Vanitie 4h 13m 41s, Resolute 4h 20m 225.

The yachts rounded the fourth mark, Vanitie at 5h 28m 465, Resolute at 5h 33m. Although the wind freshened it looked as if the boats might not be able to finish within the six-hour limit. The official

finishing times were, Vanitie, 6h 26m 29s ; Resolute, 6h 32m 21s. The official elapsed times: Vanitie, 5h 9m 295; Resolute, 5h 15m 21s. Vanitie won by 5m 525, elapsed time.

. DEFIANCE LAUNCHED. The Defiance, third candidate for cup defence honours, was launched on June 6 at City Island, in Long Island Sound, after, having had her spars remodelled. The Defiance will give a small time allowance to the Resolute and will take time from the Vanitie. ■
