The commission which is to inquire into matters relating to land tenure in tho ' Hauraki mining district and the township : '""''.of Te Aroha was gazetted to-night. The commissioners are Messrs. J. Strauchon, . chairman, Major Lask and Mr. Albert ; Bruce. .'„■'- The matters into which the commission > are to inquire are: — •■;•; (1) Whether the administration of the timber areas in the Hauraki district in the past has been in the best interests of the State. (2) Whether the existing dual control by i the warden and the Land Board should /:he abolished and whether the Land Board • '■. alone should deal with applications for the • sale of timber. (o) Whether it is desirable to recontinue the existing classifications of timber. ';-. (4) Whether the existing tenures under " which land in the Hauraki district and Te Aroha may be occupied are satisfactory. (6) To what extent it is desirable to .'./ attend such tenures with due regard to fining and other interests. ; ' (6) Whether tho holders of licenses and leases from the Crown in Te Aroha should ' he enabled to acquire the freehold and on ; ; what conditions. (7) To what extent the provisions of the ■ Mining Act and the Land Act in regard ; to the disposal of timber and the occupa- >- tion of land should be amended.
