DEAD LETTER OFFICE.
• CARELESS CORRESPONDENTS. [by telegraph.— correspondent.] Wellington, Wednesday. During • the year the undermentioned articles of value were found in letters in tho Dead Letter Offico and returned to the senders where practicable:—7sl post office orders, amounting to £2639; 67 bank drafts, £3970 ; 877 cheques, £8173; 23 dividend warranty £67; promissory notes, £451; postal notes, £578; British postal orders, £122; stamps, £52; bank notes, £577; gold, £79; and silver and copper, £15; amounting to the total value of £16,728.
Anlongst other things dealt with were ten gold watches, five gold brooches, nice gold chains, 30 gold rings seven gold tie-pins, sis gold bangles, one gold medal, five gold sleeve-links, fivo gold pendants, five small gold nuggets, 48 greenstono ornaments'. 17 silver watches, six silver chains, ten silvel* spoons, 55 metal watches, two tourist tickets, two railway tickets, 15 pawn-tickets, 33 share certificates, 52 lottery tickets, 73 Tattersall tickets. No less than 23,326 letters were wrongl r addressed and 39 letters were discovered to have been posted bearing cancelled stamps. Unclaimed registered letters numbering 6874 were dealt with and 5056 newspapers and 3495 books and other articles posted without addresses were received, many of which were subsequently applied for and delivered. A total of 25,100 newspapers were returned to the publishers, and 2576 letters and 1234 letter-cards were posted without addresses. Fifty letters bearing addresses of | a libellous character were intercepted.
