Thk All-Black representative team which is to visit Australia played the Wellington representative team at the Athletic Park this afternoon, and was defeated by 19 points to 14 after a fist and open game. The New Zealand team was not by any means up to its full strength, as a large number of the players havo not yet reached Wellington, and it was with some difficulty that a team was got together. This was instant' by the fact that Murray, a forward, was playing right-wing-three-quarter, and when McKauEie sustained an injury to one of u:s arms just bofore half-timo, "Ranji" Wilson, another, forward, filled the gap in the backs. Therefore the result, though highly deserved by Wellington on the day's play, cannot be taken seriously. Tho passing of the qualified backs of the Now Zealand team was a feature of the garao. The Wellington representatives also played well, their forwards being particularly good, whilo in their back play not one was more prominent than Nunn, the little half, whose work led to E. Ryan gaining two tries. Tho teams were as follows:— New Zealand: Fullback, O'Brien (Auckland); threcquarters, Loveridge (Taranaki), J. Ryan (Wellington), Murray (Canterbury); five-eighths, McKenzio (Auckland), Taylor (Canterbury); forwards, Lindsay (Southland), Cain (Taranaki), Irvine (Southland), Downing (Auckland), McNeeco (Southland), Graham (Olago). The players in question were disqualified for a fortnight and will, therefore, stand down for the next two Saturdays. * A Newton fourth grade player who was ordered off in a recent match for misbehaviour, was disqualified for six weeks. A complaint was made by Mr. E, Eyro. secretary of the North Shore Club, against the conduct of a supporter of the Parnell Club, who was alleged to have used bad language and threatened violence at North Shore ground on a recent Saturday. Mr, Eyre stated that whil' in the act of stopping iipectators from ant&ring the North Shore Club's training shed, the Parnell supporter pushed his way in. The latter's coat was torn, and Mr. Eyre afterwards expressed regret for having damaged it. The chairman (Mr. M. J, Sheahan) suggested that Mr. Eyre should accept- an apology, and although one was reluctantly offered, it was emphatically refused. Some evidence was taken in support of Mr. Eyre's statement. It was explained by the secretary of the Parnell Club that the man against whom the complaint was laid was carrying the players' money and watches, and wanted to go into the shed to return them. It was denied that he used bad language or threatened violence. The committee decided, in view of the contradictory nature of the , evidence, to take no action.

RUGBY IN CALIFORNIA. ' * % * UNIVERSITY ADHERES TO GAME. ! [bt xelbqeaph.— association.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Now Zealand Rugby Union to-day received the following letter from Mr. R. PMcrrott, controller of the University of California. in which, he statoß that the statement recently published in New Zealand that the University of California intended to give up Rugby caused Bome amazement. The statement that tho University of California had any thought of returning to tho American game was entirely without foundation. the cable despatch referred to University of Southern California, which had returned to the American game because its neighbours, Ponoma and Occidental, were the best and nearest competitors. An invitation was also extended to the Auckland League to send a team to Lower Waikato during the season. Consideration of those matters was deferred. The Wellington and Hawke's Bay Loagues wrote accepting August 22 and 29 as the dates for their respective' matches against Auckland. "AN IMPRACTICABLE SUGGESTION."

BLACK LIST LACKS SUPPORT.

In accordance with notice of motion given two weeks ago, Mr. Morgan O'Brien moved at last evening's mooting of the Auckland' Rugby League Executive,." That, in the interests of clean football and with the object of putting down rough play, a players' black list be compiled, the rules governing the compilation of which shall be drawn up by tho executive of the league." In support of his motion, Mr. O'Brien said that he did not wish to insinuate that play was abnormally rough at present in Auckland, but ho wished to see rough play obviated as much as possible. His intention in moving the motion was to compile a black list, and players whose names were included in the list would be especially watched. He did not wish. the list, if it wero agreed to, to bo a public one, but one that should be Jjept strictly in committee, and when a name was placed upon it, tbo player and referees only should bq notified. When a plavar appeared before tho commi> tee. ho could receive his punishment, and bis name could then be placed on the list, which would undoubtedly have the effect of making him more careful, especially when lie knew that particular attention would be given to his play in future. Mr. W. Pollock said that the suggestion was both a good one and a bad one, If e> player were called beforo the committee and cautioned or otherwise punished, and were then put on the blr.ck list, ho would be punished twice for the one offence, which was manifestly unfair. Ho believed in making an example of offending players, which would have a far better effect than hard and fast laws.

Several other members spoke against the proposal, contending that it would bo impracticable, and not fair to the players, in that a player who might be unfairly ordered off the field would bo put on the list together with players guilty of sorious offences, the innocent thus suffering with the guilty. Mr. O'Brien pointed out that his intention was for the referee to present his report on a case, and for the case to be dealt with on its merits. The motion ultimately lapsed for want of a seconder.
