WORK OF THE C.E.M.S.
SPECIAL SERVICE HELD. PROCESSION THROUGH STREETS. A special service for members of the Church of England Men's Society was held in St. Matthew's Church last night in connection with the visit of the Rev, J. Delacourt Russell, organising secretary of the societv. Prior to the service a procession, comprising members of the society, choirs of the city churches and clergy, including tho Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. A. W. Averill), formed up at St. Paul's Church, and, headed by the band of the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment, marched, via O'Rorke, Princes, Shortland, and Queen Streets, to St. Matthew's. J
It had been intended that the bishop should deliver an address at the Grey Statue, but unfortunately the heavy rain which began to fall as the procession marched down Shortland Street, compelled an abandonment of this course, and the procession proceeded direct to tho. church. Torches and banners were carried by members of the C.E.M.B. En routq to St. Matthew's the hymn, " Oh, God, Our Help In Ages Past," was sung at intervals.
Upon arrival at St. Matthew's a short servioe was held, and a brief address was given by Mr. Russell. Bishop Ax Grill did not preach. "The Joy of Service" was the subject of Mr. Russell's discourse. He said it was a glorious thing to be permitted to serve God in a way that a number of men in the Church had served that night. Dealing with the kind of service that the C.E.M.S. stood for, the preacher declared that the members of the society were banded together in one great brotherhood of prayer and service. Dividing up the letters comprising the word " service," he said that the various attributes which was essential to the success of the C.E.M.S. were sacrifice; enthusiasm; reverent and responsible service; varied service; , inspired sen ice; comradeship; and endurance. It was the C.E.M.S. which was breaking down that British reserve which made people f«o) that the Cbuich was cold and inhospitably
