BOWLING.

AUCKLAND CENTRE MEETING.

BOTH FEET ON THE MAT.

DELEGATES OPPOSE AMENDMENT.

The annual meeting of delegates from clubs affiliated with the Auckland Centre (Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association) was held in the secretary's office last evening. Mr.'E. A. Craig (chairman) presided. About 40 delegates were present.

Tho annual rep.'-rt and balance-sheet, a resume of which was published on June 20, were read and adopted.

In moving the adoption of the report tho chairman said that the past season was one of the most important in tho history of the game. The work was exceptionally heavy, and, therefore he desired to return thanks to the executive of the centre for tho manner in which they had assisted him. Mr. James Carlaw, in supporting the adoption of tho report, said the chairman deserved the thanks of the bowlers of Aucldand for bis gonerosity during tho past year. Mr. C. J. Schnauer, in referring to the balance-sheet, called the delegates' attention to the fact that the sum of £99, shown as expenditure for entertainment, by no means represented tho whole amount spent. Tho gonerosity of the chairman and Mr. Maurice Casey assisted towards the adequate entertainmont of visitors to Auckland during the past year. The work of tho Tournament Committee was criticised during the discussion on tho report by Mr. R. Rankin, who refcrredto the acceptance of entries after the making of a draw. Tho failure to complete the championship pairs tournament in reasonable time was also referred to. Mr. Rankin said that he opened tho discussion because a principle was at stake. The matter was fully discussed, and it was agreed that Mr. Rankin's objection in regard to the acceptance of late entries be noted when conducting future tournaments. Tho election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr. C. J. Schnauer; vice-chairman, Mr. C. C. Laurioj hon. secretary, Mr. A. M. Brydenj hon. treasurer, Mr. Jas. Carlaw; hon. audita-, Mr. G. F. Brimblecombe; Management Committee, Messrs. A. N. Snedden (Ponsonby), E. A. Craig (Epsom), G. B. Osmond I Auckland), H. Brookes (Mount Eden), V. Casey (Grey Lynn), J. Bouskill (Rocky Nook), and J. C. Badeley (Remuera). The following were nominated for office in the Dominion of New Zealand Association President, Mr. M. Casey; treasurer, Mr. J. Fraser; council, Messrs. (J. Baildon, J. Kilgour, J. Wo&ller, P. H. Rankin, and S. Coldicntt.

An intimation was received to the effect that Mr. C. Russell Smith had given notice of motion that ho intends to move at the meeting of the council of tho Dominion of Nov/ Zealand Association, which will bo held at Dunedin on July 7, tho following amendment to rule 3, sub-clause 2:—"The player, while delivering the bowl, must have the whole of both feet on tho mat, otherwise t'lo bowl may be stopped by the opposing side, and in that case it shall become a dead bowl." In the event of this amendment being carried, he also intends to .move a further amendment in the direction of enlarging the width of tho mat as provided in law 3, clauso 1., The new chairman (Mr. C. J. Schnauer), in speaking against the amendment, said he was not in favour of doing anything that would limit the freedom of bowling. The Now Zealand style -was more graceful than that adopted by the Australians, who kept both feet on the mat. If they went to Australia they would have to conform to tho rule, but nowhere else in tho world was it necessary. The association had discussed this matter before and had passed a rule that both feet must bo kept on the mat. That rule was etill in existence but was really a dead letter. He moved that it be a recommendation to the centre's councillors not to support Mr. Russell Smith's amendment in regard to keeping two feet on the mat. A full discussion followed, in which Mesprg. M. Casev, J. Wooller.A. Courts, A. N. Snedden.'T. Michaels, H. Brooks and J. Bouskill spoke against being compelled to keep both feet on the mat, while Messrs. Jas. Carlaw, E. A. Craig. V. Casey, J. Morton and G. B. Osmond (mostly 'instructed by their clubs) spoke on behalf of the introduction of the rule. The motion proposer 1 , by the chairman was eventually carried. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring chairman and Mr. M. Casey for their generosity during the past season.
