CEREMONY AT GREY LYNN,

THE LAST MEETING.

PRESENTATION TO THE MAYOR

The amalgamation of Grey Lynn with tho city takes effect from to morrow, and for lie next ten months, until the municipal elections take place in \pril, the present Mayor and Grey Lynn rniiwillors will sit as members of the City Council, Thereafter, the City Council will comprise 18 members, exclusive of the Mayor, to represent the united city area.

The final meeting of the Grey Lynn Council was held la.-l evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr, G. Baildon), .Messrs. G. J. Garland, J. A. Warnock, F. Brinsden, T. L. Thompson and W. Donald. Mr. T. Asltv was not, present, and the resignation of .Mr. J. W. Tattersfield was received.

Various matters of a routine nature were dealt with, and at the rouiiuiMi of the ordinary business the following resohition, moved by .Mr. Warnock, inidsivunded by Mr. Garland, k.i> i_aiii-'rl with acclamation :--" That the council, at this its final meeting, places en toi >>rd Us appreciation of th j loyal, ehVieut, and ready service of the town clerk (Mr. ,i. I". and the drainage staff; the. waterworks staff and the foreman, and the quarry staff; Superintendent Kenton and the men of the volunteer fire brigade, whose zeal ami earliest work has many times been re. marked on. The ioiiihil also takes this opportunity of expres.-ing the wish that each and everyone of the above-mentioned will hu\e every success in the future."

The Mayor stated that he had received a promise that most i i (he hoiough's employees would be provided for. Mr. .1. V. Warren (town ilcrbl replied on behalf of the office stall" and other employees, and he expressed the hope that, the City Council Would find room lor most of them.

A pleasing ceremony then took place, when Mr. Garland, on behalf of the council, presented Mr. liuildon «;tli the Grey Lynn mayoral chair and the (ablet containing the names of all the Mayors of tho borough since its inception. Both articles were suitably inscribed.

In making the presentation Mr. Garland expressed pleasure at the fact that tho first Mayor of the borough, Mr. R. T. Warnock, was present at that, the connsel's last meeting. (Applause.) Mr. Warnock was the first Mayor when tho borough was inaugurated in 1835. lie was re-elected in 1809. and held office until 1903. They owed to Mr. Warnock a debt of gratitude for the work he had done in the borough's interest in the earlier days. He had left the borough better than ho found it, Mr. Garland then made complimentary reference to Mr. Baildon's good work during his terms of office as councillor and Mayor.

Several of the councillors referred in complimentary terms to Mr. Baildon's work on behalf of Grey Lynn. Mr. Baildcn, in reply, said he hoped that he had filled the position of Mayor with dignity to the borough and credit to himself. He was glad to b ee the first Mayor of tho borough present at this, the' final meeting of the council. A suggestion made by Mr. Garland as to tho disposal of the tablet was a good one, and when the library was bnilt he would probably place it in that institution. Several framed photographs hung upon the walls of the Grey Lynn Council Cham ber, including those of Mr. R. T. Warnock and a former councillor, Mr. A- Donald, were handed to their sons, who have been members of the Grey Lynn Council for some time past. It was decided to hand the photograph of Mr. John Currie, the first town clerk of the borough, to his relatives. Other photographs are to be disposed of for the present in a similar way. but it is the intention eventually to have them boused, if possible, In the proposed library building for the district,
