PARNELL HOTEL LICENSE.
PROVISIONAL RENEWAL
A RT..TEWAI of his license by the Parnell Licensing Committee was applied for yesterday by Timothy Connolly, tho present licensee of tho Alexandra Hotel, Manukau Road. The application waa before tho committee at its annual meeting, consideration being adjourned until yesterday in view of objections raised against tho renewal. At the adjourned sitting of the committee there, were present Mr. E. C. Cotton, S.M. (chairman), Messrs. W. Whymaji, C. E. Davis, and R. S. Briggs. The liocnseo was represented by Mr. A. Hall Skelton, the owners of the hotel (the Great Northern Brewery Co., Ltd.) by Mr. R. JTcVeagh, and the police by Sub-Inspector Johnston. A preliminary discussion tooK place, during which the chairman clearly indicated that it, was unlikely that the coinmittee would grant the application if tho evidence was taken regarding tho police complaints. Mr. Hall Skelton argued that 01 two charges brought against his client, the first (that of allegedly permitting drunkenness on the premises) bad been dismissed. On the second charge (alleging that Connolly had supplied liquor to a prohibited person) a conviction had been recorded, but was being appealed against. Tho chairman said that what the committee would go upon would bo tho report as to the conduct of the house. After further argument the sitting was adjourned pending a consultation between counsel for the licensee and the owners. On resuming Mr. MeVeagh said it had been agreed, subject to the consent of the committee, that the license should bo renewed for two months, during which period Connolly wouhs sell his interest in tho hotel. Should he fail to do this, the owner? undertook to determine the lease and apply at the September meetiiv of the committee for a fresh license io"some other approved person. The license was renewed on this understanding.
