FIFTY YEARS AGO.

NATIVE "TERMS OF PEACE,"

'A TAEANAKI PROCLAMATION.

(Prom the Hbrau> of June 30, 1664.) , j Ta« Taranaki HeraJd of June 18 last sajs:— week we laid before our j readers certain terms of peace 'suggested' j by the New Zealander, and as the motto j is a good ono to 'hear both sides,' we are j glad to bo able to give them this week certain other terms 'suggested' by the Taranaki natives. These terms were contained in a proclamation posted on aboard, raid stuck up at Tataraimaka. The existence, of the proclamation was made known by Te Hira, who, of course, had passed it* on his road when he gave himself up at Orakau, and Captain Morrison at onco despatched two friendly Maoris to bring it up. The substance of it is as follows: —'Friend, Governor, tena koe.—The land, for von is from the headland (on Oxen-1 ham's land) to the rifle-pits under Ahnahu, j ther along to the foot of the Kaitake range, | and down the Oknra to the sea. All inside j these boundaries is for you, all outside for , the king. Therefore be quicK and move , all your houses from the town and else-1 where on to it. Do not bo obdurate..' . Nothing is said about granting us an amnesty for what we have done, but this is no doubt intended. As to the author-1 ship of it, the handwriting was said to hi ■ that of Hopa, of Tanranga. but Te Hirn, j we believe, says it was written by Tuwha- J kararo." I
