The suit was not defended. Lady Girouard considered that her husband's bad temper was due to the effects of the East African climate.

Colonel Si Edouard Percy Cranwill Girouard, who was created a K.C.M.G. in 1900, has had a distinguished career. Ho was born in Montreal, and entered tho Army in 1888. Ho served in the Dongola expeditionary orce in 1896, gaining his D.5.0., and in the Nile expedition in 1897. Among tho official positions ho has held are: Commissioner of Railways, Transvaal and Orange River Colony, 1902-4; High Commissioner of Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, 1907-8; Governor of Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, 1908-9; and Governor and Com-mander-in-Chief of - the East Africa Protectorate, 1909-12. Lady Girouard is tho only daughter of Sir Richard Solomon, High Commissioner for tho Union of South Africa since 1910.
