REPRESENTATIVE TRIAL MATCH. TEAM TO PLAY TARANAKI. RESULT: A Team, 2, v. B Team, 1. The Auckland _ Hockey Association's senior championship competition was sua pended on Saturday afternoon in order that an A and B trial match might, be played to assist the selector to choose representative teams for the season, and particularly for next Saturday, when the local representatives will be culled upon to defend the shield against Waikato. Contrary to the usual experience, the game was a good one, and was watched by a large number of interested spectators. The weather was ideal. The junior grade competitions and ladies' matches were also continued. A TEAM V. a. TEAM.

Play openod with several attacks by I lie A 'team, Jacobsen (on the right wing) being responsible, and from good centres scores seemed imminent. The defence was very sound, however, Baker Iraing most conspicuous from tho start, and shooting proved difficult. Soon the B's retaliated, and some good runs by Mark (on tho left wingl carried play to the A's circle, but again nothing came of the attack. 'I lie backs on both sides offered very sound defence, and it was quite evident early in the gnm® that scoring would be difficult. The A's were now getting the ball, but owing to cramped play by the forwards, and an obstinate defence, the attack was repeatedly hung. up. Murray made one or two good openings, but fiobinson and Baker proved stumbling•blocks. Tbo former made an opening for the B forwards, which was taken up by Smytho and then Welham, a good run by the last-named being blocked by Jones, who defended admirably. Continuing-, the B's held tbo upper hand for some minutes, Mark again contributing, and a shot by Barry missed tho not. Play moved up and down field until half-time was reached, when do score had been recorded. At this period the selector mane several changes. Whittaker took tho bully in the A team, W. Johns poing to inside right. Smytho went to otitsido right in the same team, replacing Jacobsen, who changed ovor to left wing, Murray playing inside-left. Thomas, A. Johns, and Osborne changed to tho B team. Upon resuming play, a considerable difference was noticeable in the A forward lino, and a scries of clever passing rushes resulted immediately. \\ intaker got the ball out splendidly to the other forwards, and fine combined work between Hits player, W. Johns, and Smythe. kept the opponents' goal in considerable danger . Good defence by Baker and A. Johns kept the net intact, and a counter-attack in which Welham figured prominently, looked promising- A little later Mark again broke away for the B's, and got in a shot which Cotton stopped. Presently, Thomas secured near the half-way, and after a good effort, ran through the defence and scored an easy goal, giving the B's a lead. A continued attack by the sumo team resulted in a couple of corners, but the resulting shots were stopped. Thomas and Mark initiated further rushes for the li s, but play was returned, and the A forwards soon aftorwards assumed command, and indulged in many fine passing rushes, both on right and left flanks. A nice opening by Whittaker. who was playing a clever game gave W. Johns a chance in tho circle, and ibis player put in a fast shot and evened up tile score. Tho B's were now penned down for some time, and only excellent defensive work by Jones kept the score down Sparrow blookad a shot by Whittakor, and W Johns miesod a further certain goal by slipping while taking the shot, and Sparrow kicked out A fine piece of work bv Jacobsen, in which Murray assisted, resulted in a nice centre across the circle, whioh Sir.ytho picked up and shot a fine goal from a difficult angle The A team was now having all the best of matters, but Baker was invincible in defence, and frustrated attempt after attempt to break through Barry was responsible for a rood lone attack for tho B team just before time, but it. was stopped on the circlo edge, and soon afterwards an interesting game ended: — A Team ?
