A bust three weeks has just been spent m Australia by Mr. D. 0. Bates, Director of the Dominion Meteorological Office. Mr. Bates stated that ho had used his time very fully in investigating tho meteorological work dono in the Commonwealth, and his conclusions would form tho subject of a report tp the Government. Mr. Bates said that tho public in Australia was" having a grtat deal done towards educating it in meteorology, and tlio' Department fas not stinted. The Commonwealth was prepared to upend as much per annum on instruments us New Zoaland expended on tho whole working of its Department. "Much was being done, too. in coiWQctic/n with the publication of weather reports. "In this respect the weather reports from NOW Zealand are one of Australia's greatest assets," he said, "Mid through this we should be able to do a great deal towards advertising the country. "Dr. R. H. Mill, director of tho British Rainfall Organisation, commonting 011 the work dono in New Zealand, said that he was astounded that wo were doing so much with the means wo had available, and though I cannot promise any great Achievements without some little expense, I trust the Government will see its way to ensure that it comes up to date, anil will make the greatest use of our opportunities. The recent wort accomplished by tho'Mawson expedition has been of immense value in throwing a lot of light on the weather conditions of the oceans about us, and I hope that tho valuable Macquarie Island station will be maintained."
