The proposal to erect a drill hall for senior cadetc in" the Domain was discussed by the City Council last night. i Mr. George Elliot submitted a cheque for £493 14s, boing £500 guaranteed by him and other citizens, iess 56 6s already received by the council, towards the purchase of the Government court at the Exhibition for the purpose of the hall. Tho cost of the hall is to be £1000, and the council undertook that if a sum of £500 wore raised by the citizens it would guarantee the other half. Mr. A. Hall Skelton asked how the council was to raise its share of the money. Several nfembers pointed out that the sum was to come from monoy which would be voted for tho improvement of tho Domain. Mr. F. E. N. Gaudin : A motion to that effect was passed in open council and was cover considered by the Finance Committoo. i Tho Doputy-Mayor (Mr. John Court) moved that the cheque bo received, subject to tho council having the right to • approve of the site for the hall. > Mr. Skelton moved as an amendment, . and Mr. F. Ho thought 1 the opinion of the acting-city solicitor should be obtained regarding this aspect 1 of the matter. 3 It was stated that a clause legalising the 3 vote had been inserted in tho Empower- } ing Bill which is to come before Parliament this session. 1 Mr. G. Read considered that the £500 should bo taken out of the profit of ■ £21,000 made in connection with the Exf hibition, the control of which was desired J by the Exhibition executive. It was originally intended that the £21,000 p should n&vo been handed over to the 1 council for the improvement of the 1 Domain or Cricket Ground, and now it • seemed that that intention was to be t "side-stepped." ' Tho town clerk (Mr. H. W. WilBon) 7 said that Mr. Read's suggestion could not s be acted upon. Mr. P. M. Mackav supported the proposal to refer the matter to tho Finance - Committee. Mr. A. J. Entrican expressed his pleasure that members were now showing some p interest in financial matters. The matter S should have been referred to the Finance j: Committee in the first place. Mr. Skelton's amendment to refer the s matter to the Finance Committee was ? carried.
