RELICS OF PAST RACE.
DISCOVERY AT NUKUALOFA.
BONES OF GREAT SIZE. [FROM our OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Nukualofa, June 2. Workmen engaged in quarrying rock for tho new roads in Nukualofa recently unearthed a number of human bones of enormous size. The find is silent testimony of either raco deterioration in the Tongans, or that some other peoplo originally occupied these islands. Some complete skulls, pelvis, and forearm bones were half as large again as these, portions of the average Tongan of to-day, and in life could not possibly have belonged to human beings under 7fVin height.
The trilithon at Kologa, the mysterious pile of stones, the origin of which can only be guessed, seems to be more in keeping with a physically powerful race of peoplo than with tho present generation of inhabitants. Tho finding of theso skeletons and the standing testimony of the huge monuments seems to favour the conclusion that other people in the dim past held sway in the Friondlies.
