FIRES AT KAPHA.
NEED FOR A BRIGADE.
PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD.
j The urgent, necessity for some means of fighting fires in the borough of Takapuna was mentioned at the Takapuna Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening, when it was decided to call a public meeting with a view to forming a volunteer fire brigade in the district. The matter was discussed as the result of the Streets and Works Committee's recommendation that the council should formulate a scheme for the formation of a fire brigade for the borough.
The Mayor (Mr. W. Blomfield) said he j thought it was high time the council con--1 sidered such an urgent question. At tho | present time, he stated, Takapuna was : entirely without assistance in the matter | of fighting any fires that occurred, and | if an outbreak did occur the fire simply | burned itself out without anybody being ablo to stay its progress. If only half-a-dozen volunteers wero enrolled it would bo something towards trying to save property. Ho mentioned that ho had had a discussion with the foreman of the Mount Eden Fire Brigade, who had given it as his opinion that there would bo no difficulty in forming a volunteer brigade. Tho foreman had also offered to give the council any assistance required in connection with the question. Members of the council were unanimous in the opinion that something should be done immediately for the protection of property from tire. It was agreed to hold a public meeting at an early date with, a view to forming a volunteer fire brigade.
