"STRIKE'S' OBJECT LESSON."

The annual meeting of the Auckland City Prohibition and Temeprance League was held last evening in the Pitt Street Methodist Schoolroom. There was a good attendance of members. Mr. W. R. Tuck (president) presided.

The committee's report for the past year, which was read by the secretary (Mr. W. J. Macdermott), and the balance sheet, which was read by the financial secretary (Mr. J. Banbury) were both adopted. The report dealt with what was described as the object lesson afforded by the closing of tho hotel bars for 16 days during the strike last November. It also referred to the urgent. demand upon Parliament for the right of majority rule at the licensing polls. The report stated that when the compulsory Saturday half-holiday came into ooperation last June,, fair-minded people petitioned that bars should not be allowed to remain open while other shops' closed, the attitude of the trade in this connection • having showed its power and its weakness. , Reference was made to the work of the organiser (Mr. R. French), the loss to the movement by the death of the late Rev. C. E. Becroft "and Messrs. G. B. Nicholls, Geo. Laurenson, John E. Macdermott, and Mrs. Craig, and the fact that the Exhibition had proved the wisdom of keeping intoxicants outside its borders.
