Lv;-;;'/*";:;';.;.'</.'■ ;;/-■;>■•'?'■; v;<Vj■ ///' : : Wt EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS. '//'//// "•'/'/-'/ '.■'■',"'. M'. : BOARD MEMBERS DIFFER. Recently; the Auckland Hospital Board decided '■ to ; ask : the: honorary medical staff to report on" the" advisability of appointing an emergency ophthalmic -surgeon'. and an emergency' surgeon if or- the T car, nose and throat department at tho hospital. ■':. The 'honorary' medical staff wrote approving of the '/suggested >: appointments. ' In coming to-;.' this conclusion it was ; stated that , the medical staff had been guided by the success '. of:,/ a similar appointment vto ; the general surgical staff.'-,
• Mr. P. J. Nerheny took■ strong exception to the report, and moved the following motion That this meeting. is strongly of opinion that emergency surgeons for the two■; apodal departments will not give the public the medium of ■satisfaction that they are 1 justly entitled to,/ and it is imperative that an additional-honorary surgeon-' be appointed to bach of. the two 'departments now. under review, arid < that the by-laws of the Auckland; Hospital,, whero ; . necessary, be altered to ' enable; the change ;to v ; be made." '.-.- •' ' < "■ ~ ..
':'■ The .Chairman. (Mr.-J.; M. > Mennie): With , all due respect to you, Mr* \ Nerheny, I.'cannot-take,that now. The report ,is a reply, to a -request from; this board. , 4 . Air. Nerheny: But the reply is not from the whole of the medical staff. ' '■''',
/Tho chairman then moved that the report' be received. Mr. Rowe wanted,to know whether, tho request had been made to the . consulting or the-honorary staff of the, hospital. ; Mr. Coyle: It was made to tho honorary staff. '■'•'■■ ' .'•■ '/"' : :^■'--■:: -: ' •
, Mr. Nerheny made a long speech, in which ho alleged that' the honorary staff wanted to stop appointments to the particular ■ departments. ; The idea of eniergoncy surgeons,'-ho said, was pnlj\throwing a red herring across tho scent, and would provide no benefit to suffering humanity. , ' • ' ; Mr. Coyle said the position taken up by Mr. Nerheny was not a fair one. The board had sent a request to the honorary staff, and asked the straff to send a report. Was it fair that the board should not tako the report ? It was unfair, he said, on Mr. Nerheny's part -to imply, that.the departments mentioned had not been conducted to the satisfaction of the public. No , complaints .had been received to bear out such a statement. ■■':'■■ ■
.After further discussion,' Mr. Harbutt gave. notice of motion in the ; direction of having an alteration made in the by-laws to provide for tho appointment of honorary emergency ■-, surgeons for. the two departments, and, further, that the board should at' once invite applications for the positions. / ' '\-.\-''-j'h\
