PINNED IN A CREEK.
FARMERS' EXPERIENCE.
HEAD PILLOWED ON STONES.
[BY TELEGRAPH,—OWN
New Plymouth, Thursday. News received here shows that a Mr. James Fleming, Pungarehu, was the victim of a peculiar accident and narrowly escaped drowning. He was engaged in removing fencing, and was hauling away the posts and wires in long lengths attached to a dray when the wire, catching on the slope of a hill, tipped over the dray whilst crossing a stream, and Mr. Fleming was pinned face downwards. Luckily, his head was above water. >
The horse, after struggling for an hour or so, was drowned. It was not until four hours later that Mr. Fleming was found. He had made a pillow for his head with the stones, and had stood his long exposure with wonderful fortitude. Yesterday he was reported to be progressing satisfactorily, although suffering severely from his immersion in ice-cold water ' and from contusion of the leg, largely brought about by the struggles of the horse while Mr. Fleming was under the dray.
