EAST COAST RAILWAY.
"MOST IMPORTANT LINE,"
FUNDS TO BE PROVIDED.
PRIME MINISTER'S PROMISE.
[IIT TFiKGJUrit.—OW.V correspondent.]
Gisborne, Thursday. ItSTiiTiN'G to a deputation here to-day, the Prime Minister said that he was glad to learn that the Knst Coast Railway was progressing steadily. In regard to'this line, he desired to say that the East Coast Railway was probably the most important line under construction at the present time.
Tho Government* added Mr. Massey, proposed to nek Parliament to do. full jimtice to this important work in tho Estimates for the ensuing year, and a sum worthy of the importance of the line would be provided. He was pleased to note that there was a section of tho railway nearly ready for opening. He would bring the matter under the notice of his colleague, the Minister for Public Works, and ho did not think any delay would be occasioned. Ho mentioned, however, that it was sometimes desirable to delay the opening of these sections until tho Public Works Department had developed tho traffic. Mr. Massey said he was not prepared to speak about the line to Motu township'at the present juncture, but lie believed that the construction of the railway should be carried on both north and south, which would relievo Gisborne's isolation at the earliest possible moment.
